The FIDO Alliance’s FIDO Device Onboard (FDO) specification is an automatic onboarding protocol for edge nodes and IoT devices. It installs secrets and configuration data to securely connect devices with cloud and edge platforms. FDO's key benefits include scalable, passwordless authentication and zero-touch, zero-trust onboarding together with late binding. FDO is compatible with various processors and operating systems. Application areas span industrial automation, healthcare, retail, and enterprise sectors. FDO has been adopted by companies including Dell, Microsoft, ExxonMobil and Red Hat. The FIDO Onboarding working group is now planning extensions to FDO that will allow ‘bare metal onboarding’’ – the ability to securely deliver ‘any OS to any device’. The presentation will cover FDO operation, example applications, available open-source software and insight into potential FDO roadmap enhancements.
